Finnish Transport and Logistics SKAL has developed various configurators to meet the needs of the transport sector. These configurators are applications designed to help transport companies interpret and apply complex industry regulations with ease. They aim to reduce the administrative burden on transport companies and enhance operational responsibility. The evolving product family was showcased in Brussels on January 24th.
The first application in SKAL’s configurator family, the High Capacity Transport Configurator, was launched in 2019. It is a user-friendly tool for determining the technical requirements of long vehicle combinations. The product family also includes the Abnormal Transport Configurator (accessible at erikuapu.fi), an open-access application for clarifying requirements related to abnormal transports. In December 2024, SKAL launched SKALculator, an application for calculating transport costs and comparing unit costs of different energy sources.
The family is expanding with Cargo Securing Configurator and Cout Emission Configurators.
SKAL presented the configurator family in Brussels in collaboration with the advocacy office FinMobility and Steve the Clerk, the company responsible for the technical implementation of the applications. SKAL met representatives from the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE) to discuss the potential for utilizing these configurators across the EU. The breakfast meeting, organized by FinMobility to kick off their advocacy year in Brussels, centered on the configurators.
– Many challenges in the transport sector are similar across Europe. For example, emission calculation and reporting will soon be relevant to nearly every transport company in Europe. SKAL’s configurators have the potential to significantly reduce the administrative burden related to regulations, even at the EU level, says SKAL’s Director Petri Murto.
The breakfast meeting in Brussels attracted a wide range of transport professionals from various European countries. The emission calculation configurator, still under development, garnered particular interest. This configurator will comply with the requirements of the EU’s forthcoming Count Emissions Regulation and the referenced international standards.
– It has been fascinating to develop configurators serving the transport sector together with SKAL. Feedback from the Brussels events clearly indicated a strong demand for these applications outside Finland as well, notes Juho Sirén, CEO of Steve the Clerk, responsible for the configurators’ technical implementation.
